General

The Clinic of Plastic Surgery of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki was established at the General Hospital "Papageorgiou" in 2004 and covers the entire spectrum of Reconstructive and Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. It is the first and only, in Greece, fully developed University Clinic of Plastic Surgery.

 

History

In 1970, the Plastic Surgeon Konstantinos Mantinaos, covered the spectrum of Plastic Surgery, as a University Attending Surgeon of the 2nd Surgical Clinic of the University of Thessaloniki's General Hospital "KENTRIKO". 

In 1978, following the decision of the Minister of Social Services A4/2933/15.07.1978 (Government Gazette 638/B'/17.08.1978), the 2nd Surgical Clinic of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki's General Hospital "KENTRIKO" was deemed suitable for the full training of doctors in Plastic Surgery (4 years), following a request by the late Professor A. Marcelos.

In 1979, the "Laboratory of Plastic Surgery" was founded within the 2nd Surgical Clinic of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, under the responsibility of Professor Konstantinos Mantinaos. In 1981 the staffing of the above Laboratory was recognized by the Plastic Surgeons Konstantinos Mantinaos and Socrates Iordanidis, while in 1982 the number of Plastic Surgery residents was increased from 2 to 4. 

In 1990, by the Presidential Decree 13/90 (Government Gazette 5/A'/22.01.1990), a Clinic of Plastic Surgery was established at the Department of Medicine of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (the only one in Greece), under the direction of Associate Professor of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Konstantinos Mantinaos, officially established in the premises of the General Hospital "KENTRIKO" (today's General Hospital "G. Gennimatas") on the basis of the joint decision of the Ministers of Health, Welfare and Social Insurance and National Education and Religious Affairs A3A/7838/12.07.1991 (Government Gazette 632/B'/07.08.1991).

In 1999, Associate Professor Socrates Iordanidis of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki took over the direction of the Clinic. 

In 2001, Professor Dimitrios Papadimitriou, Professor of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, took over the direction of the Clinic. 

In 2003, by means of Decision No. Y4a/26854/03/03.04.03 (Government Gazette 396/04.04.03 B') decision of the Ministers of National Education and Religious Affairs and Health and Welfare, the Clinic of Plastic Surgery of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki was relocated from the General Hospital of Thessaloniki "G.Gennimatas" to the General Hospital of Thessaloniki "Papageorgiou". Since June 2004, the Clinic has been relocated with all of its plastic surgery residents and other staff (University Doctors) from the General Hospital "G. Gennimatas" to the General Hospital "Papageorgiou".

From November 2004 until September 2008, the Director of the Clinic of Plastic Surgery of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki at the Papageorgiou General Hospital was Associate Professor Lambis Lazaridis.

Since September 2008, Professor Evterpi Demiri of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki has been in charge of the Clinic, a position she holds until today. Under the current management, the Clinic received the European Certification as a Training Centre by U.E.M.S. (EBOPRAS Certificate of Accreditation, November 2013), as well as the European Certification as a Hand Trauma Centre by the Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand (F.E.S.S.H.). In January 2013, the Clinic received an award from the General Hospital "Papageorgiou" for its excellent organization, methodical approach and results.

 

ACTIVITIES

The Department of Plastic Surgery of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki has a total of five faculty members, two Senior Attendants, one Academic Fellow of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, eight Plastic Surgery residents, and three Research Associates. The staffing of the Clinic is completed by 8 nursing staff members.

The activities of the Clinic extend beyond its own 15 beds to consultative and collaborative functions with the other Clinics of the Hospital, as well as with the Clinics of other hospitals in Thessaloniki.

In the Clinic of Plastic Surgery of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, patients with problems of the whole spectrum of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery are treated, covering the needs of all of Northern Greece, while in some specialized areas patients from all over Greece and abroad are treated.

Within the framework of its clinical activities, there are general and special purpose Outpatient Clinics related to breast surgery, with special emphasis on breast reconstruction after mastectomy, the surgical treatment of benign and malignant skin and soft tissue tumours, the treatment of surgical diseases of the hand, the reconstruction of head and neck defects, microsurgical reconstruction of the lower limb, surgical treatment of primary and secondary lymphedema, reconstructive surgery of vascular anomalies and other congenital malformations of childhood, as well as the treatment of cases of cosmetic surgery, if there are appropriate indications.

 

CLINICAL WORK

  • The surgical treatment of benign and malignant tumours and Melanoma of the skin and soft tissue tumors and LASER unit operation.
  • Breast surgery with special emphasis on Breast rehabilitation after mastectomy for cancereither immediately or late.
  • The treatment of surgical diseases of the Hand (injuries, inflammation, tumours, congenital and degenerative diseases).
  • The surgical treatment of primary and secondary Lymphedema and lymphatic tissue diseases.
  • The reconstructive surgery of Vascular Anomalies, etc. Congenital and Acquired Deformities of childhood.
  • The treatment of burns, both in the acute phase and in the chronic phase.
  • The restoration of Head & Neck Deficiencies and Craniofacial abnormalities.
  • The microsurgical rehabilitation of lower limb deficiencies.
  • The surgical treatment of post-bariatric patients.
  • Aesthetic Surgery, for the correction and/or improvement of the physical image to meet aesthetic standards of appearance, where there are objective criteria and clear indications.

NUMBER OF INPATIENT BEDS

  • 15 beds in permanent use at the General Hospital "Papageorgiou"
  • 5-10 beds, used by patients facing problems that meet the spectrum of plastic surgery, who are guests in other clinics of the General Hospital "Papageorgiou", or in other hospitals of Thessaloniki.

NUMBER OF OPERATING THEATRES

  • One (1) room of the Regular General Surgery four (4) times a week
  • One (1) room of the Short Stay Clinic 2 times a week
  • Micro-operation room (daily)
