Laboratory
The Pathological Anatomy Laboratory of PAPAGEORGIOU G.H. is a modern, well-organized and equipped lab, which is staffed by experienced physicians and pathologists, as well as by technologists and administrative staff specialized in the field of pathological anatomy. The Laboratory is also supported by the Hospital's IT Department.
The importance of Pathological Anatomical Examinations
The final diagnosis of the various diseases is made for the first time or confirmed, the treatment is determined or modified and the progress and outcome of the treatment is monitored based on the findings of the pathological anatomical examinations.
Services
The Laboratory's activity is the macroscopic and microscopic processing of samples from the Clinics-Departments of our Hospital, as well as from external patients, for the purpose of pathological anatomical diagnosis:
- histological tests on materials of all surgical and endoscopic preparations,
- biopsies of the gastrointestinal tract (oesophagus, stomach, colon, small and large intestine)
- biopsies of the urinary system (prostate, bladder)
- genital biopsies (cervical biopsies, diagnostic curettage material, etc.)
- biopsies of skin lesions or skin tumours.
- breast biopsies
- kidney biopsies to diagnose kidney diseases (glomerulonephritis).
- bone marrow biopsies and lymph node biopsies for haematological diseases.
Also, rapid biopsies (rapid histological-interventional examinations) on fresh surgical material are carried out, for the identification of tissues (e.g. parathyroid), diagnosis of neoplasms and is of primary importance because it offers direct diagnostic direction. Rapid biopsy is an important process in the daily practice of pathological anatomy.
In addition, the basic procedures are supported and complemented - to an increasing extent - by many new specialised diagnostic techniques such as histochemistry, immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry.
The laboratory is fully computerized and equipped with modern devices (two open and closed tissue devices, two work benches for macroscopic examination of preparations with full ventilation system, automated device for routine staining and coating of slides, automated device for immunohistochemistry DAKO). Furthermore, it has two refrigerated microtomes and exhausts in all areas where work is carried out, in order to protect the environment and the health of employees.
The Laboratory maintains an archive of all pathological anatomical examinations performed since the beginning of its operation (2000) until today. The archive includes the findings of histological examinations, paraffin cubes and slides.
The laboratory offers a basic training programme for students (practical training) as well as a six-month specialisation programme for graduates carried out by the experienced technologists of the Department.
