CLINICAL WORK

Approximately 800 patients are admitted to the ICU per year, of which 500 are General ICU patients and 300 are cardiac surgery patients. The average mortality in the General ICU is about 18% similar to the predicted mortality from the APACHE II system for measuring the severity of ICU inpatients. The average mortality of cardiac surgery patients is about 4-5% perfectly in line with international data.

EDUCATIONAL WORK

Intensive Care Unit, trains four residents, appointed by the Ministry of Health. From time to time, Intensive Care Specialists from other ICUs in Greece are trained, in mechanical ventilation and transesophageal echocardiography.
The training of the specialists takes place every Tuesday and Thursday 12-13 p.m. according to the training program of the Greek and European Intensive Care Unit.
The training of nursing staff is the responsibility of the Head of the Department and the Nursing Department of the hospital assisted by the medical staff for specific issues and when required.

RESEARCH WORK

Both Medical and Nursing staff of the ICU participate in Greek and International Conferences with original papers which are published in the respective proceedings of the Conferences (5-10 per year). The staff also participate in international multicentre studies, the results of which have already been published in international journals (1 per year since 2004) and has published 2 papers in English-language medical journals.

The specializations of the ICU cover the mechanical ventilation, ultrasonography, control of in-hospital infections, metabolism and from the nursing side in ethics in the end of life, in-hospital infections and prevention of bedsores.
