History
The A' Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinic of the Department of Medicine of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, (established as "Regular seat of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinic by the Government Gazette A' 141/6.6.1945 "On the designation of necessary chairs of the Faculty of Theology and Medicine of the University of Thessaloniki") which serves teaching, research and nursing needs in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The Clinic consists of the following Departments:
- Obstetrics Department.
2. Gynaecology Department.

- A special department of Embryometric Medicine, which also includes prenatal screening.
2. Special Department of Reproductive Medicine, which also includes the Human Reproduction Unit (OFFICIAL JOURNAL OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES B. 987/7.11.1997).
3. Special Department of Gynaecological Oncology.
4. Special Department of Pelvic Floor Diseases and Urogynaecology.
5. Special Department of Endoscopic Surgery.
6. Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy Unit.
7. Unit of Reproductive Endocrinology (Journal of Laws No. B' 987/7.11.97) and
8. Genetics Unit.
Purpose
- The purpose of the Clinic is to:
α) Cover the teaching and research needs of the Department of Medicine, as well as of the other Faculties and Departments of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and of the students of the Military School of Corps Officers (M.S.A.S.) at undergraduate and postgraduate level, on subjects that are included within the scope of the Clinic's activities, as specified in Article 1 of this decision.
b) Support of various social needs, when and whenever specific assistance is requested, which belongs to the issues with which the clinic deals.
c) The qualification of doctors, nurses and other health professionals and their continuous education and training.
d) The provision of care and hospitalization to patients with diseases that fall within the scope of the Clinic.
e) The execution of clinical, experimental and research projects in order to study the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the research for new techniques and therapeutic methods.
f) The cooperation and exchange of scientific knowledge with other academic research institutions in Greece or abroad.
g) Cooperation with European and international organizations for the realization of research, educational programs and general activities related to the scientific subjects of the clinic.
η) The organization of seminars, symposia, conferences, lectures in order to inform the medical and other staff of the clinic, the other clinics of the hospital and other nursing institutions.
- The work of the Clinic is divided into educational, research and clinical work.
A) The educational work includes:
α) The training of students of the Department of Medicine of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, students of the Military School of Corps Officers (M.S.A.S.) as well as medical students from abroad in the implementation of programmes resulting from European and transnational agreements (e.g. Erasmus, Helsmisc etc.). Their training is carried out by the teaching and research staff, is theoretical and practical, according to the curriculum.
b) The training of medical specialists for the acquisition of the specialty of Obstetrics-Gynaecology or specialisation in this field. It is divided into practical and theoretical. The practical course is aimed at acquiring clinical experience in the diagnostic and therapeutic treatment of patients falling within the scope of obstetrics and gynaecology. Theoretical training includes clinical and theoretical courses, lectures by faculty members and guest speakers, discussions of interesting cases, clinicopathological discussions, literature review, teaching visits by the director of the clinic and faculty members, and educational conferences, round tables and seminars.
c) The training of physicians or other scientists in the context of the preparation of doctoral theses or other scientific work, following a decision of the Faculty of Medicine.
d) The training of medical residents of other specialties in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the context of continuing medical education.
e) The training of medical specialists, obstetricians-gynecologists and other specialties, in the specific subjects as described in Article 1.
f) The training of the nursing staff of the Hospital and other hospitals and students of nursing departments of higher education institutions, in cooperation with the nursing staff of the clinic and the respective nursing schools.

B) The research work includes the execution and publication of clinical and experimental studies by the members of the faculty of the relevant clinic independently or in collaboration with other faculty members or researchers as well as original doctoral theses. It is a primary concern of the clinic, carried out under the supervision of the Director and aimed at the more effective management of the various diseases of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and its disciplines, with the ultimate goal of improving the care provided to patients.
C) The clinical work includes clinical diagnosis, paraclinical investigation, therapeutic treatment and overall care of patients who are hospitalised in the clinic and its units or are followed in the outpatient clinic. The members of the faculty and other physicians of the clinic, accompanied by the resident physicians and a team of students, visit patients for information, completion, change or discontinuation of hospitalization, or order for laboratory and other tests. During these visits, which are attended by the director, diagnostic and therapeutic problems of cases of interest are discussed.
Staff
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is staffed by medical and other personnel serving at the Department of Medicine of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the hospital where it operates. The medical staff consists of the Director and members of the Teaching and Research Staff of the Department, whose scientific activities fall within the teaching, research and clinical interests of the clinic concerned. These staff shall be supplemented by residents and qualified doctors of the National Health Service who are assigned to the clinic in accordance with the provisions in force. The other staff shall include members of the Specialist Technical Laboratory Staff (STL) and members of the nursing staff, whose work shall be determined in accordance with the needs of the clinic concerned. Members of the teaching and research staff and members of the specialised technical laboratory staff shall be assigned to the clinic in accordance with the provisions of university legislation, while the other members shall be assigned in accordance with the provisions in force.

The Senate of the AUTH, following the recommendation of the MODIΠ-AUTH defined the Quality Policy of the Institution as follows:

Introductory data
The research work is the third main axis of the daily activity of the members of the 1st Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and aims to promote scientific knowledge and experience in all areas of modern Obstetrics and Gynaecology, with the ultimate goal of improving the health care provided to the female population.
Research study protocols
Each of the special departments of the Clinic, at regular intervals, draws up research protocols and constantly strives to follow the respective guidelines for their implementation, compliance and evaluation. The research protocols are brought to the attention of the Director and members of the Clinic and are discussed and reviewed at the scientific meetings of the Clinic, where the assistance of colleagues is sought for their fullest possible implementation.
Conducting research studies
Each member of the scientific staff of the Clinic is obliged to write, work, and contribute to the completion and publication of the results of research studies, the subject of which is either general Obstetrics and Gynaecology or its individual fields. Each research study proposal is submitted to the Director of the Clinic, discussed at the Clinic's scientific meetings and, if accepted and when required, approval is sought from the Hospital's Scientific Committee. As a rule, research studies are the result of collaboration between members of the Clinic from the same or different departments, and often the product of collaboration with other medical or non-medical colleagues within the hospital, the university and other units, hospitals and universities in the country and abroad.
Announcements and publications
The scientific staff of the Clinic ensures the publication of the results of the research studies in the form of announcements (oral or posted) at Greek and international conferences, symposia, scientific meetings, workshops, seminars, meetings and/or publications in Greek and foreign language journals and books. Special care is taken for the publication of the work of the members of the Clinic in prestigious foreign scientific journals with a high impact factor.
Organising scientific events
Each special department of the Clinic is obliged to organise scientific events of a smaller or larger scope every year, every two years or every three years. For each scientific event, the Director of the Clinic shall appoint the main person responsible and the members of the organising committee, who shall then be responsible for all organisational matters relating to the scientific event.
Preparation of doctoral theses
According to the current regulations of the Department of Medicine, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is entitled to grant doctoral theses. The aim of the Clinic is to grant this opportunity to scientists who demonstrate a special affinity for research activity, a willingness to cooperate with the members of the Clinic and a suitable personality and academic ethics.
