Clinic
Background
The Anesthesiology Department began its operation in 01/01/2000, since the very beginning of the hospital.
The first anesthesia was administered on 07/01/2000 to a patient of the 2nd Surgical Clinic for placement of a femoral implant.
This was followed by the operation of the operating theatres for other Clinics, namely the 2nd Orthopaedic Clinic (13/01/2000), the 1st Surgical Clinic (04/05/2000) and the Thoracic Surgery Clinic (23/05/2000).
The ENT Clinic started operating in the operating rooms on 10/12/2001, while the same year the operating rooms of the Emergency Department.
This was followed by the Neurosurgery Clinic from 11/09/2002, while in 2003 the first University Clinics were established and the University Surgery Department was opened. Since 04/08/2003 the Orthopaedic Clinic was opened and the University Clinic of Orthopaedics was established. Urology from 03/12/2003.
In the following year 2004, the installation of other University Clinics was completed, namely the Pediatric Surgery, Ophthalmology, First Surgery, Plastic Surgery and the First Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic and the operation of the Surgeries took the form it has today.
Organization
- Organisation of the operating theatres.
- Training of anaesthetists and nurses in the operation of the mechanical equipment.
- Preparation and distribution to nurses of a printed material with guidelines for the preparation of anaesthesia equipment.
- Distribution to the Surgical Clinics of an instruction sheet concerning the preparation of patients for anaesthesia.
- Preparation and distribution to anaesthesiologists of printed material with guidelines for preoperative assessment and preparation.
- Compilation of documentation forms for the operation of the Department, including the Critical Incident Record Form for quality control.
- Electronic organisation of the archive and the creation of a database for the recording of incidents.
Objectives
- Proper preoperative preparation without postponing surgery and short preoperative hospitalization.
- Common ground between anaesthetists on the issues of preparing patients for surgery.
- Continuous quality control and improvement.
- Systematic training of nurses.
- Scientific competence of all anaesthetists to treat all cases regardless of specialty, severity and age.

The Anaesthesiology Department carries out the following activities Activities :

Β. In the operating room area of the A' Obstetrics / Gynaecology Clinic on the 2nd floor
( 2 Gynaecological rooms,
1 C-section room,
1 minor surgery room,
1 assisted reproduction room,
4 delivery rooms
1 recovery room - 4 beds )
C. In the area of the Surgeries of Emergency Department (2 operating rooms).
D. An important sector of activity of the Department of Anaesthesiology is the operation of Metanesthetic Care Unit, for surgical patients, with a capacity of 12 beds.
The NICU operates on a 24-hour basis and treats patients immediately after surgery and for a period of 1 to 24 and sometimes 48 hours, when the general ICU is unable to treat them.
In addition, the anaesthesiologists perform catheterizations of central veins of other Clinics (except the Nephrology Clinic) for the needs of parenteral nutrition, chemotherapy, etc.
Ε. Another important area is the extra-surgical activities, such as anaesthesia for diagnostic imaging examinations, endoscopic diagnostic procedures and radiotherapy cases.
F. It also covers emergency situations cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the Hospital's Clinics, in the ICU and participates in the evacuation of critically ill intubated patients.
G. A sector that is extremely innovative for the Greek standards is the intra-Day hospitalisationof Orthopaedic, Paediatric and other cases, operated under General or Regional anaesthesia and leaving the Hospital on the same day.
Η. In the context of the preparation of patients for day hospitalisation, an Outpatient Anaesthesia Clinic operates every Monday morning and Wednesday afternoon.
I. The activities of the Anesthesiology Department cover also the treatment of intense μpostoperative pain in collaboration with the Nursing Service.
Ι. The Anesthesiology Department completed the organization of the Experimental Surgery of the Hospital, which contributes for research purposes.
