The RADIOTHERAPY DEPARTMENT the G.Η. PAPAGEORGIOU started its operation in November 1999 and serves annualy an average of 1800 patients.

Its infrastructure includes two High Energy Linear Accelerators and High Dose Rate therapy System with Ir-192 by VARIAN, a 16-slice Philips CT scanner - Emulator, VARIAN Treatment Planning Systems as well as dosimetry and quality control systems.

The Radiotherapy Department is staffed by five Radiotherapy Oncologists, two of whom are assistants, three Radiophysicists, nine Radiotherapy Technologists and one Nurse.

A large number of therapeutic applications of External Radiation Therapy are performed in the Department, such as: Brain, Head and Neck, Breast, Lung, Gastrointestinal System, Gynaecological System, Urinary System, Lymphomas, Sarcomas, Soft Tissue, Bone Tumours, Skin Metastases, Benign Diseases (Pituitary Gland Adenomas, Peyronie's Disease) etc., as well as High Dose Rate therapy of gynaecological diseases.

 

The Radiotherapy Department is the first public unit in Greece, which after the installation of the DHX Silhouette VARIAN linear accelerator, introduced in March 2015 the most modern technique of rotational radiotherapy with volumetric modulated intensity VMAT (Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy) in many diseases, especially those of the prostate, head and neck.

By 2017, more than 800 patients had undergone this technique with great success.

The Radiotherapy Department of the PAPAGEORGIOU Hospital is one of the two in the country and the only one in Northern Greece that applies in collaboration with the Haematology Clinic of the G.H. G.PAPANIKOLAOU the Total Body Irradiation (TBI), preparatory to the transplantation of allogeneic haematopoietic cells.
