Background
The 1st Psychiatric Clinic of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki was founded in 1943 as the 1st Neurological and Psychiatric Clinic and was established at the Municipal Hospital of Thessaloniki. Later it was transferred to the Psychiatric Hospital of Thessaloniki. In 1983 the Clinic was divided into the A' Neurological and A' Psychiatric Clinic. In 2003 it was transferred to Papageorgiou Hospital where it operates today. The directors of the Clinic were Prof. Dimitrios Kouretas (1943-1948), Prof. Agapitos Diakogiannis (1971-1983), Prof. Agapitos Diakogiannis (1971-1983), Rev. (1983-1991), Prof. Hariton Fotiadis (1983-1991), Prof.. Georgios Kaprinis (1991-1998), Prof. Kapprinis (1991-1998), Prof. Kapprinis (1991-1998), Prof. Kapprinis (1991-1998), Prof. H. Konstantinos Fokas.
Activities
The Clinic has an Inpatient Department with 22 beds.
The Psychosomatic Medicine Unit of the First Psychiatric Clinic supports the rest of the Hospital departments in a consultative manner. In addition, it provides interface coverage, has inpatient facilities and operates an outpatient clinic.
The Outpatient Clinics are: Psychiatry, Psychogeriatrics, Sexual Disorders, Learning Disorders, Psychosomatic Medicine, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Cognitive Psychotherapy, Psychology, Neuropsychology, Speech Therapy and Mental Health Certificates. Patients who were hospitalized in the Clinic are followed up by the Re-entry Clinic.
The Clinic provides full specialty Psychiatry to residents. It also trains medical students in the H, IA and IB semesters, as well as a number of General Medicine residents in Psychiatry.
The research work of the Clinic focuses mainly on the fields of General Psychopathology, Neuropsychology and Psychophysiology.
