Activities
With well-trained staff, modern equipment and methods, and on a 24-hour basis for inpatients, the department has the folowing branches:
Microbiology Laboratory
- Direct Gram and Ziehl-Neelsen staining of samples for the microscopic detection of pathogens.
- Μicrobial cultivation for the detection and isolation of pathogenic aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and fungi from patient samples in solid and liquid media.
- Blood samples cultivation for aerobic, anaerobic bacteria and fungi of patients with microbiota/sepsis.
- Identification of bacteria with an automated identification system.
- Parasitological and microscopic examination of faeces.
- Fecal cultivation for Salmonella, Sigella, Hyersinia, Campylobacter and enterohaemorrhagic coliforms.
- Special cultivation of sputum, bronchial secretions and others for Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
- Identification of tuberculosis mycobacteria using the PCR molecular method.
- Monitoring of resistance (MIC) to antibiotics. Antifungal resistance testing. Anti-tuberculosis resistance testing.
- Testing antibiotic resistance mechanisms using molecular methods.
Biochemical Laboratory
- Routine biochemical blood tests for the functional control of the cardiac, renal, gastroenterological system etc.
- Checking of biological fluids (CSF, pleural fluid, peritoneal fluid, synovial fluid, etc.).
- Lipid monitoring.
- General and microscopic urine examination.
- Pregnancy and faecal haemoglobin tests.
- Spermogram
- VMA, ACE, 5-HIAA, aldolase.
Virology Laboratory Department
- Blood tests for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV (AIDS), Rubella, CMV and toxoplasmosis daily.
- Special blood tests for syphilis, echinococcus, leishmaniasis and amoebas daily.
- Special urine tests for legionella, stool tests for rotavirus and adenovirus and vaginal smears for chlamydia daily.
- Special blood tests for salmonella, brucella and leptospira daily.
- Special blood tests for herpes, chickenpox - shingles, infectious mononucleosis, measles, mumps, parvovirus, pneumonia mycoplasma and helicobacter pylori every week.
- Blood DNA viral load for patients with chronic hepatitis B and specific RNA viral load for patients with chronic hepatitis C by molecular methods.
