Background

The organization of the "Papageorgiou" Hospital includes, among others, the Surgical Clinic Papageorgiou General Hospital of Thessaloniki since 2000.
The Clinic, under the direction of Dr. George Hadjikostas and the invaluable support of its medical associates and the Hospital Administration, started its operation in March 2000.

  • On May 10th 2000 is the official opening of the Clinic and the first chest operation.
  • Since September 25th of the same year, open heart operations with out-of-body blood circulation begin, in parallel with the activity of the Hemodynamic Laboratory. The Clinic covers the full range of Heart, Chest and large vessel interventions. By May 2007, a total of more than 3350 interventions concerning: 
    • 2000 Cardiac surgery.
    • 700 chest operations.
    • 150 thoracic cavity large vessel interventions and
    • 500 minor operations.

Mission

The aim and mission of the medical and nursing staff of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Centre is the continuous qualitative and technological upgrading of its operation, in order to continuously offer the human beings, the inalienable right of dignified and civilized Health.

Future objectives

  • Develop a program of all modes of mechanical cardiac support.
  • Implantation of an artificial heart.
  • Development of a heart-lung transplant programme.
  • Endoscopic Thoracic Surgery.
  • Actively involved in the hospital's experimental laboratory.
