Patients' rights

Article 47 of Law 2071/1992 lists in detail the rights of the patients in hospital

The patient has the right to :

  • has access to the appropriate for his illness services of the Hospital (right to health service outreach).
  • receive care services with the due respect in his human dignity (right to respect for human dignity).
  • To Consent or to Negate any diagnostic or therapeutic procedure. In the case of a patient with partial or total mental incapacity, this right shall be exercised by the person who by law acts on his/her behalf (right to consent to diagnostic and therapeutic procedures).
  • To be informed concerning his state of health and to takes decisions or participate in making decisions that may affect his or her later life (right to information and decision-making).
  • To be informed fully and in advance for the risks which may arise or result from the use of unusual or experimental diagnostic and therapeutic operations. The use of such procedures shall take place only after consent of the person of interest, which may be revoked at any time. The patient must feel completely free to decide to accept or reject at any time any cooperation for the purpose of Research or training (right to be informed of risks and to participate in research and training).
  • To protect his/her privacy. The confidentiality of the information and the content of the documents concerning him/her, the medical notes and the findings must be guaranteed. (right to privacy).
  • be treated with respect and to be granted the right to perform his Religious and Ideological beliefs (the right to respect for religious and ideological beliefs).
  • present or declare protests and objections and receive full knowledge regarding the actions and outcomes (right to protest and object).

Obligations of patients - accompanying persons

Patients and visitors must comply with the rules of the hospital and cooperate harmoniously with the hospital staff. More specifically:

  • if the patients are covered by Social Security from a health insurance fund, they must submit the required hospitalization documents to the Patient Office prior their hospitalization.
  • if patients are not covered by Social Security, they must pay the price of their hospitalisation to the Patient Office (with a small deposit on admission and full payment at discharge).
  • if patients are not covered by social security or they are indigent, they must inform the hospital's social service in time.
  • patients must provide all possible information about their medical history and clearly express their needs and wishes.
  • patients and visitors must respect doctors, nurses, or the rest of the hospital's staff and other patients.
  • patients and visitors must respect the peace and quiet rules and not use mobile phones, TV and radio (without headphones).
  • visitors must comply to visiting hours schedule and not bring food for patients on the hospital premises.
  • the presence of companions in the nursing areas outside visiting hours is not permitted without special written permission.
  • both patients and visitors are required to keep all areas clean and not to bring food and flowers in the hospital ward rooms.

IT IS ILLEGAL AND OFFENSIVE TO THE WORKERS THEMSELVES
SMOKING IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED INSIDE THE HOSPITAL PREMISES
