Cytology Laboratory

Cytology Laboratory

The Cytology Laboratory was launched in June 2000. It is staffed by the Senior Cytologist-Physician Evangelia Athanasiou and the Technologist Eleni Karampela.

The Laboratory offers significant services on the diagnosis and clinical evaluation of illnesses. The immediate benefit of Cytology to patients is the provision of specialized diagnostic solutions to both simple and more complicated and problematic cases. This is achieved through the microscopic determination of the disease through cytological preparation and cytochemical and immunocytochemical techniques.

.Since its launching, the Cytology Laboratory has been performing the liquid based cytology procedure

The Cytology laboratory from its foundation applies the Cytology Liquid Phase (liquid based, cytology)

The following examinations are performed in the Cytology Department:

Examination of the vaginal, endocervical and exocervical discharges (Pap Test)

- Cytological analysis of breast discharges.
- Cytological analysis of sputum, bronchial discharges (brushing, washing).
- Cytological analysis of urine.
- Cytological analysis of the fluid contained in body cavities, as for instance ascitic pleural and peritoneal fluid.

Fine needle aspiration biopsies of:
a) Organs located near the skin surface as for instance: breast, thyroid gland, lymph nodes, salivary glands, soft tissues, and
b) Deep organs, as for instance: lungs, liver, pancreas, kidneys, bones including the spinal cord, under the guidance of the CT scanner

A fine needle aspiration procedure as well as a cytological examination of testis are performed for the investigation of the infertility. At the same time scrapings are examined cytologically from changes of the skin and mucous membranes, e.g. mouth.

Finally, intra-operative imprints of tumor-like lesions and tumors are carried out in the Laboratory.
